The Icelandic fishing industry at the forefront

Environmental report 2024

We're proud to present our latest environmental report for the Icelandic fishing industry, a testament to our commitment to sustainability. Iceland has always been at the forefront of responsible fishing practices. Our individual transferrable quota system, rigorous regulations and supervision, coupled with the dedication of our fishermen and industry professionals, have ensured that our fisheries are among the most sustainable in the world.

From our pioneering work in science-based catch management to our world record  in recycling fishing gear, we've set the standard for the industry. As a testament of that we’ve reduced oil consumption by nearly 40% since 1990 with various efforts and investments. In addition, we’ve collected and recycled well over a target of 80% of outdated fishing gear, leading the way in responible gear management and waste reduction. Equally important is our commitment to fair wages and working conditions for our  fishing crew and factory workers , ensuring that our seafood is also socially sustainable.

This report highlights our continued progress in these areas. It showcases the innovations and advancements that have solidified Iceland's position as a global leader in sustainable seafood. We are certainly not claiming that we are perfect, but we are moving in the right direction by having a clear vision and making sure that all our decisions are in alignment with that vision. Our goal is also to inspire other fishing nations and work towards a more sustainable future for our oceans.

By choosing Icelandic seafood, you're not just selecting a superior product with a lower carbon footprint  – you're supporting a sustainable industry that prioritizes environmental stewardship and social responsibility. You'll find the report and other relevant information at FisheriesIceland.com
